Facebook Haxored… or maybe not

Adrienne Felt has written an interesting paper on a XSS attack she found in Facebook. Facebook have fixed it now, but it was based on a flaw in the fb:swf tag used for embedding swf files in a profile. I’m surprised it took this long for something like this to come along, but I’m sure there’ll be plenty more soon based on the Facebook developer platform.

Conditions of Sending Email | etbe

Russell Cocker over at etbe.coker.com.au has an interesting post on changing SMTP welcome messages to display disclaimers. After initiating an SMTP session with his mail server, it points the client to a URL with the conditions of use. Basically his conditions pre-empt any ridiculous claims made by signatures on incoming mails.

I quite like the idea of using something like this. The fact that all interaction is done automatically by sendmail clients and I doubt many people check the welcome messages on SMTP servers mean you could have whatever you like in there and not get questioned about it.

The conditions of sending mail to my server are now as follows:

1. A signature will in no way restrict my use of your message. You sent the message to me because you want me to read it (it was not mis-sent, my mail server does not accept mis-addressed mail). I will keep the message as long as I like either deliberately or because I forgot to delete it.

2. I reserve the right to publish any email that is threatening (including any threats of legal action). I don’t like being threatened and part of my defence is to publish such threats at an appropriate time. Anyone who is considering the possibility of threatening me should consider when their threat may re-appear.

3. I reserve the right to publish any email that is abusive/profane, is a confession of criminal or unethical behaviour, or is evidence that the sender is a liar or insane.

4. I reserve the right to forward all amusing email to my friends for their enjoyment.

Simple Nokia N96 Text to Speech (or How To Make Your Phone Swear)

The Nokia N95 has a simple text to speech thing as part of the standard OS. This is used to playing back “voice tags” of contacts so you can get an idea of what you’re meant to be saying for the voice dialling. I never use the voice dialling on my N95, but I found of something pretty cool the other day. You can put whatever you like in the name of a contact and have the N95 say it. Just create a new contact with the text you want said in the name field and put a couple of digits in the Mobile field. Select Done, the scroll down to the Mobile entry, press Options -> Play voice tag… SWEARING PHONE!!!

“windows was not able to enable this device” External USB disk

I just almost threw my new Lacie 500GB out the window because Vista was refusing to mount it as a disk. Device manager showed the drive under “Disk drives”, but the drive it’s self was marked as “Disabled”. Trying to “Enable” the drive would cause Vista to throw “windows was not able to enable this device”. Very helpful! How to fix it….

Plug it in.
Right click on the external drive in Device Manager.
Select “Uninstall”.
“Safely Remove” it.
Unplug it.
Plug it back in.
Windows should install the drivers again properly.
